SBV SERVICES STATEMENT – SUSPECT ARRESTED FOR R4 MILLION THEFT FROM CASH PROCESSING FACILITY AT A MALL IN MIDRAND
Houghton 15 January 2022 – SBV Services would like to commend the South African Police Service (SAPS) for the apprehension of a former employee allegedly involved in the theft of R4 million from an SBV Services cash facility at a shopping mall in Midrand, in June 2019. This facility was established as part of a service offering to process cash for the tenants within the shopping mall and to reduce the risks associated with cash-in-transit within the shopping mall. This cash facility was closed in 2020.
A case was lodged with the SAPS when the incident occurred and SBV’s Risk and Compliance team has worked tirelessly on the investigation. This is in line with SBV’s relentless pursuit of any crimes that impact the business. Mark Barrett Group CEO says, “as a key service provider ensuring that cash is consistently available for the citizens of South Africa, and as a responsible corporate citizen, we take any criminal incident very seriously. If an incident does occur, we focus our efforts, alongside those of the relevant authorities, to ensure that the perpetrators are brought to justice and no case is closed until it is resolved.
The information gathered by the SAPS and SBV’s Risk and Compliance team over the past two and a half years has resulted in the subsequent arrest of the suspect on 06 January 2022. The suspect has appeared in court on Friday 14 January 2022 and will remain in police custody. We value our close working relationship with the SAPS and their diligence and expertise. I would like to commend South African Police Service and my colleagues.”
Due to the sensitive nature of the investigation, SBV cannot disclose any details regarding this case. We continue to cooperate with all relevant authorities.
SBV asks members of the public call the SBV hotline 083 408 7029 with any information about cash-in-transit crime. This line is active 24/7 and all callers can be assured that confidentiality is maintained.
